eSAS has partnered with FAER again to offer exciting programs for early-stage scholars in anesthesiology!

eSAS: CAREER OPTIONS FOR ANESTHESIA RESEARCHERS

The panel will describe several career options for academic anesthesiologists, with emphasis on quality improvement; basic science and clinical research; leadership; and education.

Moderator:

  • Catherine Chen, MD, MPH (Assistant Professor at University of California, San Francisco)

Speakers:

  • Jed Wolpaw, MD (Residency Program Director at Johns Hopkins) will talk about being a clinician educator and a residency program director; and about education research and the ACCRAC podcast.
  • Michael Mathis, MD (Assistant Professor at University of Michigan) will talk about clinical research and quality improvement, including the use of big data, as highlighted by his project involving the Michigan Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) registry.
  • Oluwaseun Johnson-Akeju, MD, PhD (Anesthetist-in Chief at Massachusetts General Hospital) will talk about being a basic scientist and a department chair at a large academic institution.
eSAS: KEYS TO SUCCESS AS AN ACADEMIC ANESTHESIOLOGIST

The panel will provide an overview of the day-to-day life of a physician-scientist and the balancing of clinical, research, and life obligations. The panel will also discuss the benefits of doing research, and offer practical advice on starting research and overcoming challenges along the way.

  • Broc Burke, MD, PhD (Instructor at Washington University in St. Louis)

Speakers:

  • Lara Crock, MD, PhD (Instructor at Washington University in St. Louis) will talk about balancing research and clinical duties, work/life balance, and benefits available to physician-scientists such as the NIH loan repayment program.
  • Meghan Lane-Fall, MD, MS (Associate Professor at University of Pennsylvania) will talk about funding opportunities for young investigators and building a research team.
  • Vivianne Tawfik, MD, PhD (Director of Fellowship in Anesthesia Research & Medicine at Stanford) will talk about research opportunities for medical students and residents, residency programs with research tracks in anesthesia, characteristics of a competitive research track residency applicant, and examples of successful junior investigators in anesthesia who benefited from these specialized programs.
BREAKOUT SESSION: WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT MY RESEARCH?

Representatives from eSAS and FAER/ARMA will host breakout rooms to meet participants, facilitate networking, and work with them to improve their presentations on conveying why their research is important.
