Residency
Medical students who are interested in becoming an academic anesthesiologist should pursue an anesthesiology residency program that provides a dedicated research track. While the details of individual programs vary, most offer 6-9 months of research time during residency followed by a 1-2 year commitment to research at that institution after graduation.
FAER offers a funded summer research program for medical students, MSARF.
eSAS has compiled detailed information about residency programs that offer Research Tracks.
For advice on selecting a research-oriented residency, see the post by Boris Heifets, MD, PhD: Picking A Research-Oriented Anesthesiology Residency.
If you are interested in learning more about these tracks or have specific questions about applying, fill out this Survey and we will respond as quickly as possible.
Fellowship
Some programs also have institutional T32 grants that provide 2-3 years of protected research time after completion of the anesthesiology residency requirements, with a commitment of 80% time to research and 20% time to clinical activities. They are a great opportunity for aspiring anesthesiologist-scientists to get involved in research projects that can launch their independent careers. Currently 16 Anesthesiology Departments hold NIGMS T32 grants.
A document that contains information about each T32 program is available below.
